At Kwanko, we are proud to be at the forefront of innovation and social responsibility. As part of our CSR commitments, we are launching a new and unique feature in the affiliate marketing space: the Carbon Emissions Calculator.

How does the Carbon Emissions Calculator work?

The calculator measures and analyses your carbon footprint for the campaigns you publish. A new column called "Carbon" will now appear in your statistics.

Soon, a dashboard summary will be available, along with additional updates planned for 2025.

You will now have access to:

  • Automatic calculation of carbon emissions generated by your campaigns (in kg CO₂).

  • Comprehensive insights and history: analyse your impact by website, time period (up to 3 years), or campaign.

What are the benefits for you?

Enhance your CSR efforts: Show a managed carbon footprint to advertisers.
-  Improve environmental performance: Identify actionable strategies to reduce your footprint and achieve better ratings.

This tool is just the beginning and will continue to evolve over time. Together, let’s build a more environmentally friendly advertising ecosystem

Kwanko's Carbon Emissions Calculation Methodology

Kwanko's approach relies on three key indicators:

1. Publisher Carbon Footprint (PCF):
Represents the total carbon emissions linked to a publisher, expressed in kg CO₂.

  • If a Publisher provides its own carbon footprint, it is integrated proportionally to the percentage of revenue generated via Kwanko.

  • If no carbon footprint is available, Kwanko applies default values based on established standard metrics.*

2. Carbon Click (Carbon Clic):
Measures the carbon emissions generated by an ad click, expressed in grams CO₂ (g CO₂).

3. Global Carbon Emissions:
The total emissions generated by all clicks over a given period, expressed in kilograms CO₂ (kg CO₂).

*Emission factors for this category are sourced from the following databases: ADEME’s Base Empreinte 23.2 (French Ecological Transition Agency), Company Report 1.0, Exiobase 3.8.1, and Kwanko's Carbon Report conducted with Greenly.

Contribute to this project by sharing your carbon footprint

  • Your data will be incorporated into our calculations, optimizing your results.

  • This will allow you to demonstrate your environmental commitment to advertisers.

Don’t forget to specify the percentage of revenue Kwanko represents in your total revenue.

Carbon Equivalencies Examples

To better understand the emissions generated, here are some examples:

  • 100 kg CO₂: Equivalent to emissions from a short-haul flight of 500 km.

  • 1 Paris-New York flight: Approximately 1.4–1.7 tons of CO₂.

  • Paris-Marseille trip by car (775 km): Around 93 kg CO₂.

  • 1 tree absorbs approximately 15 kg CO₂ per year.
1 ton is equivalent to 67 trees absorbing CO₂ over one year.

  • 1 ton of CO₂ equivalents to:

  • 4,596 km by car

  • 4,348 km by airplane

  • 9,671 km in an electric car

  • 423,729 km by high-speed train

  • 2.4 televisions (40-49 inches)

  • 6 laptops

  • 32 smartphones

  • 42 cotton t-shirts

  • 2,209 liters of bottled water

  • 138 beef-based meals
